Cliff Fox KU4GWCallsign: KU4GW (USA)

QTH: Taylorsville, NC, USA

When were you first licensed? October 16, 1996. I earned my Extra class 6 months later in April 1997.

How did you become interested in radio? I became interested in radio at age 15 when my Mom bought me a Cobra 85 CB radio and a quarter wave ground plane antenna as a Christmas gift. Mom says it’s the only thing she ever bought me for Christmas that I never got tired of.

Favorite radio activities and locations: CW operating in the field using either my Ten-Tec R4020 or Hendricks PFR-3A. I have operated from Hiddenite Family Campground and from trails here on Barrett’s Mountain and from Matheson Park in Taylorsville. I hope to activate the Blue Ridge Parkway this summer as part of NPOTA. The Parkway is only about 1 hour away from my home QTH.

Future hobby plans or goals: More digital and CW portable operating.

Member of any radio organizations or clubs: ARRL, 4SQRP #536 = 4 State QRP Group, NAQCC #1491, SKCC #652, Flying Pigs QRP Int. #1183, ARRL First Class Operators Club, RadioClub72 #46, QRPARCI #15877, GORC #399 = Great Outdoors Radio Club, 30 Meter Digital Group = 30MDG # 865, Digital Modes Club = DMC #6362, Feld Hell Club = FH #62.

Describe some of your favorite field radio experiences: My most favorite radio experience was getting to attend the 2013 Dayton Hamvention and help with the Feld Hell Club Special Event Station under callsign W8H. I got to meet WB6NOA Gordon West and most of the crew from Amateur Logic TV podcast and Ham Nation podcast with the exception of K9EID Bob Heil.

Transceivers and antennas: Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V, Yaesu Ft-897D, Icom IC-706MkIIG, Hendricks PFR-3A, Ten-Tec R4020, Radio Shack HTX-242.
